Wamiqa Gabbi has paved her path in the film industry. Having started her career as an actor at a young age, she saw the highs and lows in the glamour world. With Bhool Chuk Maaf winning at the box office, she took another step towards becoming a bankable star in the Hindi film fraternity.
Wamiqa Gabbi on pay disparity
Coming from a non-film family, Wamiqa is working towards creating a safe space for herself and bridging the pay gap between male and female actors. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, the actress spoke about finding creative ways to prove her bankability.
Wamiqa said, “The fact that pay disparity exists doesn’t consume me, but there is this feeling that you’re a woman and you will be paid less and that is how it is. The reasoning is that a male actor can pull that much audience, but you can’t make a film without the heroine. I don’t understand the logic behind this. Sometimes, they take a hero and pay a lot of money, and then the film doesn’t work. Why doesn’t their fees get affected?”
She added, “I want to find different ways to earn that money. I wish to do it in a creative way where I feel happier and decrease that pay gap for myself. I can’t deny this fact that pay disparity is there. Not every ‘male-centric’ film can do without the female lead.”
Wamiqa's lineup
After Bhool Chuk Maaf, Wamiqa has Dil Ka Darwaza Khol Na Darling with Jaya Bachchan and Siddhant Chaturvedi. She will feature with Akshay Kumar, Tabu and Paresh Rawal in Priyadarshan’s horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla. Wamiqa plays the lead in Adivi Sesh’s Telugu action thriller, Goodachari 2.
