Why Did Sonam Kapoor Leave Bollywood?

Mumbai, 11 June 2025

Sonam Kapoor, one of Bollywood’s most recognizable faces, has been noticeably absent from the big screen in recent years. While some speculated she had permanently stepped away from the industry, the actress clarified that she has taken a purposeful hiatus, primarily to focus on motherhood and personal priorities.

Kapoor, who welcomed her son Vayu in August 2022, candidly shared in a 2023 interview that “acting will definitely take a backseat,” but emphasized that she doesn’t intend to stop working entirely. “I started working when I was 17 and took a break when I was 36… I miss cinema and the industry, but this time was very important for me to bond with my baby and have time with my family,” she said.

The actress, known for films like Neerja (2016) and Raanjhanaa (2013), last appeared in theatrical releases in 2019 with The Zoya Factor and Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. Her more recent project, Blind, streamed on JioCinema in 2023, marking her first film post-maternity.

Kapoor, who divides her time between London and Mumbai, has been selective about accepting new roles. Industry sources say she signed with Yash Raj Films’ talent management wing, signaling a careful approach to her comeback. “Sonam has always been a thoughtful artist who balances her career with her personal life,” said an industry insider, adding that “she’s now looking for the right project to mark her return.”

While social media debates have suggested that Kapoor may have stepped back due to fewer offers, the actress refutes these claims, insisting her break was a personal choice rather than a result of diminished opportunities.

Fans can expect to see her on screen again soon, with industry buzz hinting at a potential project announcement in early 2026. Until then, Kapoor remains focused on family life, while keeping the door open for meaningful roles that align with her artistic vision.
