Priyanka Chopra Jonas, a leading figure in Bollywood turned global star, revealed in a 2023 interview that her move away from Hindi cinema was driven by disillusionment with industry politics and personal conflicts. “I was being pushed into a corner in the industry. I had people not casting me, I had beef with people … I was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break,” she told Armchair Expert podcast host Dax Shepard.
At the height of her Bollywood success—boasting acclaimed roles in films like Mary Kom and Bajirao Mastani—Chopra began to feel restricted. She encountered “colourism” early in her career and was uncomfortable navigating behind-the-scenes power dynamics.
An opportunity in the U.S. entertainment industry emerged when she was approached for a music project by Anjula Acharia of Desi Hits. The offer helped Chopra break from Bollywood’s closed circles without feeling she was “groveling” for roles.
Although her music career didn’t flourish, it led to her landing the lead in ABC’s Quantico (2015–2018), establishing her as the first South Asian woman to headline an American network drama. This pivot allowed Chopra to bypass Bollywood’s politics and re-imagine her global presence.
While some have speculated about backlash following her departure from projects—such as her exit from Salman Khan’s Bharat in 2019—Chopra has consistently framed her exit as an active choice for artistic freedom, not forced exclusion.
Today, Chopra balances a varied international career—producing cinema through Purple Pebble Pictures and acting in high-profile projects like the Amazon series Citadel and upcoming films—powered by creative control and global reach.
